*general information:

Shigeaki Iwai makes works investigating the self-referentiality of communication from a critical point of view. The basis of his work is to question and explore various significances and values in contemporary life. In recent years, his research into the situations of multi-culturalism resulted in art works in various media. Often he makes installations where the different media add different layers which interact and resonate to from complex constellations of meaning. At the moment, he is observing the multi-cultural situation in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. From the observations on phenomena in the mixed society, Shigeaki Iwai is formulating several new projects.

*as text for my project "self-introduction about names"

 "self-introduction about names"

My name is Iwai Shigeaki, I think my surname name "Iwai" came from the ancient clan in south part of Japan, and it means almost like "Rockwell" in English. It may not be so popular in my country.

My first name "Shigeaki" consists of two Chinese characters: first one means "success"; second one means "bright" or "sunny" in English. I was named by my parents.

Sometimes I think my name  gives impression that my parents put too much expectation to me. But now I can say "thanks" to them, because I already get used to my name.
